Student Devotion Session 1: Something for Everyone

Key Verses: Romans 1:14-17, "14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

What if you woke up one morning to find an epidemic is sweeping over your community. Some sort of killer virus is infecting people, so they would only have a few days to live. The community is in chaos. People are scared to go outside. Fear has set in. People are hysterical. No one knows what to do. But here's the catch: You are the only one who has the cure. Somehow, someway, you hold the antidote that will completely heal people of the disease. How cool is that?

What would you do? Well, it's obvious right? You'd keep quiet! No need in causing a fuss. I mean, what if someone didn't want to be healed? And how would you get the antidote to them? You wouldn't want to go knock on their door. After all, they might be eating dinner. And what if they didn't believe you? What then? See, you're better off keeping the antidote to yourself, right? Right...

Read Romans 1:14-17. Romans is a cool book; it is actually a letter written by Paul to the Christians in Rome. Paul wanted to visit the Christians there, to teach them and encourage them. So, before he came to visit, he sent them a letter. The Book of Romans is one of the most amazing books of the Bible. It contains an incredible summary of Paul's theology. In just a few chapters, Paul explained in amazing detail the power and importance of the gospel. It is a book no Christ-follower can afford to pass over.

In the passage you just read, Paul explained to his readers that nothing could make him keep the power of the gospel to himself. Paul understood that the story of Jesus is life to those who hear and believe. He wasn't about to keep it to himself.

Keeping the story of Jesus to ourselves is like keeping a life-saving antidote away from dying, diseased people. You wouldn't keep medicine from a sick person. Why do you hesitate to tell people about Jesus?

God's salvation is available to all people. But they must be told in order to believe. What are you waiting for?
